World Championships Wrap-Up

July 19th, 2007 by Isabelle

Dear Friends,

Please accept our apologies for the delayed report.  Racing at the World Championships ended Friday, July 13th, where we finished 10th overall, top US Women’s 470 team, easily qualifying the United States for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

We are satisfied with our result, while nevertheless always disappointed with not having finished higher in the standings.  We accomplished our two primary goals for the event: qualifying the United States for the Olympics and finishing top 10.  Additionally we were the best American women’s team.  Next time we’ll set our sites higher!

The World Championships were six days of thrilling racing.  We climbed in the standings throughout the regatta from 45th after a disappointing first day, to 26th, 17th, 11th, and, finally, 10th.  We raced in the windiest conditions we have ever raced in as a team — and excelled!  Very exciting!  In the six races we sailed in over 18 knots we rounded the first windward mark in 3rd, 3rd, 15th, 3rd, 3rd, and 2nd!  These translated into 4th, 3rd, 10th, 3rd, 17th and 11th across the finish line due to capsizes.  We remain thrilled with our upwind performance.

Many thanks to coach Peter Alarie and US Sailing Team Coach Skip Whyte, as well as the US Sailing Team PET staff Scott Weiss and Mark Kenna.

The next regatta on our schedule is the Olympic Trials, October 3-14, in Long Beach, California.  We will begin training in Long Beach on July 31st.

We would like to thank our sponsors:  Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, RBS Greenwich Capital, Fishers Island Yacht Club, Harken, Kaenon, and Samson Ropes.  Many, many thanks to all of the generous individuals who donate to our campaign and get us on the water every day.

We are very excited about being back in the United States, and are looking forward to a busy social calendar!

The biggest event of the summer is the Commodore’s Olympic Gala at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, Saturday, August 11th.  Please visit the website for more details.  Tickets start at $75 for under 30, and $150 for everyone else, and are still available! http://www.shyc.us/olympicball.html

In addition, this Saturday, July 21st, we will be teaching a clinic at Fishers Island Yacht Club as well as giving a presentation, followed by a reception.

Saturday, August 4th is the quad-club party at the Wadawanuck Yacht Club, in Stonington, CT.

Finally, Saturday, August 18th, there will the the Band Under the Tent at the Fishers Island Yacht Club.

We look forward to seeing many of you in person!

Best,

Erin and Isabelle
