Olympic Trials Day 2
October 7th, 2007 by Isabelle
Dear Friends,
After the second day we are still trailing the women’s leaders, but we finally turned things around and beat all of the other women in the second race of the day. We finished 5th and 5th, and are currently 12 points behind the leading women with 12 races to go. We moved up one spot in the regatta, and are currently 8th overall, losing the tie-breaker for 7th.

Both races were sailing in a northwesterly breeze. In the first race the wind was light and unstable, 6-7 knots. We had a good start 1/2 of the way up from the pin, but Amanda and Sarah had a good start at the pin and were ahead of the fleet in the first left shift not even two minutes into the race. Although we sailed well and conservatively, we could not catch up enough distance and stayed at the back of the top pack. We were mixing it up for third through fifth, and lost that battle.
The second race brought windier and more stable conditions, with 10-12 knots of wind. We had a great start at the boat end of the line, and were able to control Amanda Clark and Sarah Mergenthaler, the leading women’s team, immediately. We never let them out of our sites, and crossed the line ahead of them in 5th.
Generally, we sailed much better today than yesterday. We are looking to keep the positive trend going. Again, we have no room for mistakes.
Thank you to all of you who make our effort possible!
Best,
Erin and Isabelle
