Olympic Trials Day 8

Dear Friends,
We just wanted to send out a quick update to say that today was not a good day. While not mathematically eliminated from winning the trials, we are practically eliminated. We had a 4th and an OCS (over early at the start) today, and Amanda and Sarah finished 3rd and 4th. They are 17 points ahead of us, and their worst race is a 6th place. All they have to do is finish one of the races.
Going into today, we had to average finishing 2 boats in front of the other women. Our strategy was to push them harder at the start, try to draw a foul or give them a terrible start, and then go on and win the race. In the first race we engaged them heavily at the start, forcing them to get a terrible start. We were 1st at the first mark, and they were 8th. They gained a lot of distance in the first lap. By the second windward mark they had passed us to be 3rd and we were 4th.
In the second race, the start was more of the same. We started at the windward end of the line in a pack of three boats. Even though we were well back from the boats around us, the other boats must have been far over the line because our entire pack was called over early. We never considered going back because we did not think we were over early, and we needed to be in the front of the race.
We will go out and race hard tomorrow.
Thank you very much to all of you who have supported our campaign, especially the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club. Thank you also to our other sponsors: RBS Greenwich Capital, Fishers Island Yacht Club, Harken, Kaenon and Samson Ropes.
Best, as always,
Erin and Isabelle
