Dear Friends,
This is just a short update as it is getting late. We had a much better day on the water, finishing 6th and 9th, and moving up to 12th on the scoreboard. It feels good to be moving up in the standings!
The wind today was a southerly, with “normal” shifts — a refreshing change from yesterday’s westerly blowing right off the land that brought 40 degree shifts on one upwind leg. We had good speed for most of the upwinds today, and decent speed (that improved throughout the day) riding the big, steep waves downwind. In both races we were in third place at one point! In the first race we held a third place for an entire tight reach, with two of the largest, strongest teams behind us! And then those two teams, the French and the Dutch, passed us downwind. In the second race we were fourth at the first windward mark, third at the leeward mark, and then lost boats on the second lap. Below is a photo of us crossing the finish line in the second race.
We have two races left to move into tenth place and qualify for the medal race. Stay tuned!
