Well, today was a light sea breeze, a little bit like yesterday, except our first race was not nearly as bad and our second race was not quite as good. We were 23rd in race three of the regatta, and 9th in race four. Overall, we moved up to 19th on the scoreboard. There’s still a lot of work to do, but we have seven more races left to go. Tomorrow should be wild! The forecast is for 25-35 knots, decreasing to 15 to 25 knots late afternoon, with 6 foot swells! That will be a much more exciting report! We are looking forward to a change in pace, if we make it out on the water. For details from today’s racing please read on.
In the first race today we had about 6 to 8 knots. We had a decent start mid-way down the line, but got pinched off by a French team that started below us and sails incredibly high. We bounced around in the middle of the course, and were forced to overstand the windward mark on the left side of the course in order to have a good clean air lane. We rounded the windward mark very far back, and ground back as far as we could during the race, but could only make it back to 23rd. We picked up a boat at the last leeward mark onto the finish reach — a nice change from yesterday’s leeward mark rounding!
Clouds started rolling in between the races, and we knew the breeze would be different in the second race. We started all the way at the boat–right–end of the starting line and headed right. Despite not having a great start, we were able to tack on some big shifts upwind. We were in good shape at the windward mark — better than 15th! We continued to pass boats here and there, had a great second upwind leg, and rounded the second windward mark in 10th. We passed one more boat downwind to finish the race in 9th overall.
