Dear Friends,

In the medal race today we won a Bronze medal at the Sail for Gold Regatta!  We tied for 2nd overall with the Spanish, but lost the tie-breaker to place 3rd out of 46 teams as the Spanish beat us in the medal race.  Congratulations to the Japanese team who won the Gold, and to the Spanish who won the Silver.  We are thrilled with our Bronze, and feel like we are on track for an Olympic Gold in 2012!  We were also the top U.S. Women’s 470 Team, with the next Americans finishing well behind us in 19th place.

This regatta was extremely important to us because it was our first time sailing at the venue of both the trials for the 2012 Olympic Team, as well as the 2012 Summer Olympics.  The U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Team are a two part system:  The 2012 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team will be determined by our finishes at the 2011 Sail for Gold Regatta in June in Weymouth, and the 2011 World Championships in December in Perth, Australia.  We are excited about the racing that we will be doing in Weymouth over the next two years.  The variety of conditions that we have seen in Weymouth, ranging from light to medium to heavy winds, all very shifty, will make for very challenging racing.

We fly home tomorrow, Sunday — Erin goes back to work on Monday, and Isabelle starts her last year of law school at NYU on September 1st.  We will be doing a lot of training this fall and winter, and our next big 470 regatta will be in January 2011 at the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta.
